Curbside History

In July 2016, Lisa Giordano of Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, arrived at the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute’s midtown Manhattan offices bearing a cache of letters written in Italian. On an early Saturday morning in March that same year, she had come upon the letters strewn on the sidewalk in front of a brownstone on Degraw Street, between Smith and Court Streets. Carroll Gardens was once a significant Italian American community that became gentrified over time, many houses being gutted for renovation by new owners.

Giordano thought the Calandra Institute, a City of New York University research institute, might provide a haven for these discarded artifacts. We accepted her donation, even though the Institute is not an archive, with the hope to one day do justice to those epistolary correspondents.

Toward that goal, the Institute partnered with graduate students Domenica Diraviam, Viviana Pezzullo, and Federico Tiberini at Florida Atlantic University to make the letters part of the Italian American Memories: Documentary Archive, an online digital collection of letters and ephemera from Italian American lives the three students had created.

We are excited to announce the launch of the Vivo-Fruttauro Collection, which features transatlantic correspondence between members of the Vivo-Fruttauro families from Brooklyn, La Spezia, and Bagnoli. The letter writers covered a variety of topics, including pending emigration to the United States, among other quotidian matters.

January 12, 1947. Letter from Vincenzo Vivo to Giuseppina Vivo

Description
An account of the resource
Vincenzo writes to his wife whom his affectionately calls “his dear Giulietta”. He is overjoyed to learn of her good health over this past year since she has suffered so many headaches in the past. His prayers are being answered. He recognizes that life is fleeting, and that happiness is so important, and he feels that it is an injustice that they have comforts that his own grandchild does not. He asks his wife not to hesitate to ask him for money for these needs. Vincenzo praises his wife’s beauty and tells her how much he cherishes the photo she sent. It seems like a century since he last saw her and cannot wait to embrace her. He awakes in the morning depressed because she is not there and leaves for the store (“storo”) at 8 with Tomasso. He spends the day there. His leg no longer hurts since he is in America. Vincenzo discusses the breakdown of the items he has sent, including mention of a dress for her and for Rosina and a suit for Giuseppina’s brother. $50 was sent to don Guigliermo for Giuseppina. He thanks her for deciphering something that was in a letter he had written to Peppino which they thought was English but apparently they just could not interpret Vincenzo’s handwriting. Vincenzo is happy to learn that his wife has been dancing (reference to Angelino playing the tarantella in previous letters). He says she will have a good time when they attend parties (“pari’”) in America or when they go to “campagna” (which may be a reference to the region or to the countryside). Vincenzo mentions that he received seven letters from various family members and is responding to one per day. He learned that of a warehouse in Napoli which housed packages from America was burned by arson. He hopes none of the packages he has sent were lost. He signs Vincenzo Vivo Romeo.

Description
An account of the resource
Vincenzo comments to his son that he spent a happy Christmas but missed his family like a shepherd misses his flock. He reiterates the details of how his son spent Christmas Eve, eating from 7-10, then dancing until they finally went to church. He is very touched that Angelo gifted a bouquet of roses to his grandmother for Christmas and wishes to show the same thoughtfulness. He is glad they received the packages. Greetings are conveyed on behalf of Maria and Gemma and their families. The next part of the letter is for Vincenzo’s grandson, Angelino. He praises Angelino for being so attentive to his grandmother and for all the good things she writes about her grandson. He is hopeful that under De Gasperi conditions for the Italian working class will improve.

Description
An account of the resource
(Envelope missing) Danny asks Leona how she's doing and tells her that he'll be working a cooking shift on the night of the big Christmas dinner. He tells her about his new friend Robert Ianarelli who just got married and starts writing about how much he's been thinking about finally getting married to her. He wants to live with her and take the opportunity while they can. He says that in 20 days part of Leona's dream will come true. He also mentions that he is jealous of her going out and worried that she'll fall in love with Bucci. He says he has written Bucci a couple of times, but that Bucci hasn't written him back. In a post-script, Danny tells Leona that he's sending her a book to read in her spare time that he thought was good.
