August 8, 1943. Letter from Danny Badia to Leona Badia, née De Nardo
Subject
The topic of the resource
Italian-American, 1943
Description
An account of the resource
Danny opens the letter as he customarily does, "My darling wife", even though they are not yet married. He suggests a GI wedding like the one he saw the day before and encourages Leona that if she comes to visit him that they will get married on site because only wives are allowed to stay in the guest house. He announces that the training will be 17 weeks so he will not be home before November and that he has lost weight and his hair is falling out. He does not want to send a photo to his mother so as not to worry her.

Curbside History

In July 2016, Lisa Giordano of Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, arrived at the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute’s midtown Manhattan offices bearing a cache of letters written in Italian. On an early Saturday morning in March that same year, she had come upon the letters strewn on the sidewalk in front of a brownstone on Degraw Street, between Smith and Court Streets. Carroll Gardens was once a significant Italian American community that became gentrified over time, many houses being gutted for renovation by new owners.

Giordano thought the Calandra Institute, a City of New York University research institute, might provide a haven for these discarded artifacts. We accepted her donation, even though the Institute is not an archive, with the hope to one day do justice to those epistolary correspondents.

Toward that goal, the Institute partnered with graduate students Domenica Diraviam, Viviana Pezzullo, and Federico Tiberini at Florida Atlantic University to make the letters part of the Italian American Memories: Documentary Archive, an online digital collection of letters and ephemera from Italian American lives the three students had created.

We are excited to announce the launch of the Vivo-Fruttauro Collection, which features transatlantic correspondence between members of the Vivo-Fruttauro families from Brooklyn, La Spezia, and Bagnoli. The letter writers covered a variety of topics, including pending emigration to the United States, among other quotidian matters.

Giuseppe hopes that Zia Antonietta and all the other family members are fine. Giuseppina is supposed to leave for the U.S. in February, but she postponed her trip in March, because of her poor health conditions.

An account of the resource
Peppino writes about Angiolino's accident while working. He has a swollen gland on his groin and needs 8 days of complete rest. Rosina adds one page to the letter in which she describes her daily activities and points out that the flour has run out and they cannot find any pasta (“oggi domenica cuciniamo i, spaghetti, finito la farina e più non si trova un filo di pasta”). She would like to send the remaining cigarettes before they smoke them all (“Vorrei spedirti quelle altre sigarette per levarmele di casa prima che non li fumano tutte”).

Description
An account of the resource
Angelo writes a very affectionate letter to his “carissima nonna” In the six-page letter, he speaks about his health and an uncle’s health. He discourages her to go to America based on the newspaper article about what happened to the ship that was directed to the U.S. with the wives of allies. There were horrible weather conditions that caused them many hardships. He recommends that she wait for better weather.
