<p>In July 2016, Lisa Giordano of Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, arrived at the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute’s midtown Manhattan offices bearing a cache of letters written in Italian. On an early Saturday morning in March that same year, she had come upon the letters strewn on the sidewalk in front of a brownstone on Degraw Street, between Smith and Court Streets. Carroll Gardens was once a significant Italian American community that became gentrified over time, many houses being gutted for renovation by new owners.<br /><br />Giordano thought the Calandra Institute, a City of New York University research institute, might provide a haven for these discarded artifacts. We accepted her donation, even though the Institute is not an archive, with the hope to one day do justice to those epistolary correspondents.<br /><br />Toward that goal, the Institute partnered with graduate students Domenica Diraviam, Viviana Pezzullo, and Federico Tiberini at Florida Atlantic University to make the letters part of the Italian American Memories: Documentary Archive, an online digital collection of letters and ephemera from Italian American lives the three students had created. <br /><br />We are excited to announce the launch of the Vivo-Fruttauro Collection, which features transatlantic correspondence between members of the Vivo-Fruttauro families from Brooklyn, La Spezia, and Bagnoli. The letter writers covered a variety of topics, including pending emigration to the United States, among other quotidian matters.</p>

His father,<strong> Angelo Badia</strong> was born on January 28, 1888 in Barisciano, a <span>town in the province of L'Aquila (Abruzzi). His mother <strong>Laurina Badia, née Buccilli</strong>, was born January 1, 1899 in Tocco da Casauria, a town in the Province of Pescara (Abruzzi). Angelo and Laurina immigrated to the United States and settled in Bellaire, Ohio, where they got married in 1917. Successively, they moved to Detroit, Michigan, where they both died, respectively in </span>1962 and <span>1984.</span><span><br /><br /></span>Danny had two olders sisters and a younger brother: <strong>Orienta Christina</strong> (December 25, 1918), <strong>Bambina Aurelia</strong> (born on October 8, 1920), and <strong>Hiram Sylvester Julius</strong> (August 1, 1937). <br /><br /><span><strong>Leona Badia, née De Nardo</strong> was born on June 18, 1923, in Bellaire, Ohio, and died on May 18, 2017. About 15, played morra with him but he darn beat him all the time, needs to practice with his son. Ha ha. He was going to bring spaghetti for him. He had moved to Paris with his parents just before the war. Starting to walk again, hope to get job in the kitchen to help war effort. There was no envelope, but Danny mentions to be in England.

His father,<strong> Angelo Badia</strong> was born on January 28, 1888 in Barisciano, a <span>town in the province of L'Aquila (Abruzzi). His mother <strong>Laurina Badia, née Buccilli</strong>, was born January 1, 1899 in Tocco da Casauria, a town in the Province of Pescara (Abruzzi). Angelo and Laurina immigrated to the United States and settled in Bellaire, Ohio, where they got married in 1917. Successively, they moved to Detroit, Michigan, where they both died, respectively in </span>1962 and <span>1984.</span><span><br /><br /></span>Danny had two olders sisters and a younger brother: <strong>Orienta Christina</strong> (December 25, 1918), <strong>Bambina Aurelia</strong> (born on October 8, 1920), and <strong>Hiram Sylvester Julius</strong> (August 1, 1937). <br /><br /><span><strong>Leona Badia, née De Nardo</strong> was born on June 18, 1923, in Bellaire, Ohio, and died on May 18, 2017. His father,<strong> Angelo Badia</strong> was born on January 28, 1888 in Barisciano, a <span>town in the province of L'Aquila (Abruzzi). His mother <strong>Laurina Badia, née Buccilli</strong>, was born January 1, 1899 in Tocco da Casauria, a town in the Province of Pescara (Abruzzi). Angelo and Laurina immigrated to the United States and settled in Bellaire, Ohio, where they got married in 1917. Successively, they moved to Detroit, Michigan, where they both died, respectively in </span>1962 and <span>1984.</span><span><br /><br /></span>Danny had two olders sisters and a younger brother: <strong>Orienta Christina</strong> (December 25, 1918), <strong>Bambina Aurelia</strong> (born on October 8, 1920), and <strong>Hiram Sylvester Julius</strong> (August 1, 1937). <br /><br /><span><strong>Leona Badia, née De Nardo</strong> was born on June 18, 1923, in Bellaire, Ohio, and died on May 18, 2017. His father,<strong> Angelo Badia</strong> was born on January 28, 1888 in Barisciano, a <span>town in the province of L'Aquila (Abruzzi). His mother <strong>Laurina Badia, née Buccilli</strong>, was born January 1, 1899 in Tocco da Casauria, a town in the Province of Pescara (Abruzzi). Angelo and Laurina immigrated to the United States and settled in Bellaire, Ohio, where they got married in 1917. Successively, they moved to Detroit, Michigan, where they both died, respectively in </span>1962 and <span>1984.</span><span><br /><br /></span>Danny had two olders sisters and a younger brother: <strong>Orienta Christina</strong> (December 25, 1918), <strong>Bambina Aurelia</strong> (born on October 8, 1920), and <strong>Hiram Sylvester Julius</strong> (August 1, 1937). <br /><br /><span><strong>Leona Badia, née De Nardo</strong> was born on June 18, 1923, in Bellaire, Ohio, and died on May 18, 2017.
